An 11-year-old girl has died of injuries she suffered when her backpack got caught in a school bus door and was dragged before falling free and being crushed by its wheels.
The driver of the bus Harold Dean McCouty failed to notice that the girl's backpack was hung up in the bus door and began driving away.
The bus went 60 feet before Shelby was "dislodged" from her backpack and the right rear tires of the bus ran over her pelvic area.
Her father, Mike Davis, had seen the accident from his front yard and had already scooped his daughter up to take her to Jackson Hospital in Marianna when the driver of the bus stopped to locate the child.
Shelby was then airlifted to Shands University Center in Jacksonville. She died a day after her father rushed her to the hospital.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Shelby was among 14 children being dropped off Tuesday at a school bus stop near her rural home.
Charges are pending the result of an investigation.
