Alabama’s Department of Education Truancy Guidelines may be adopted in the next few months by most of the 120 school districts across the state.
At the Elba School Board Meeting, there were several questions by members in regard to possible jail time for parents.
As the truancy guidelines are written, a parent or guardian will be held responsible for a child who does not show up for school.
If a child has seven unexcused absences, the district will file a petition against the parents.
The board unanimously approved the state's truancy policy.
