Lights on Afterschool

The Boys and Girls Club of The Wiregrass was one of more than 5,000 locations around the country to hold an after school rally.

These rallies give parents, community and business leaders, elected officials and the media an opportunity to see first hand the benefits of after school programs.

The Boys and Girls Club Afterschool Programs strive to encourage school age children to enhance their educational, emotional and athletic skills.

Officials said their mission is to raise national and local awareness of the importance of after school programs and to ensure that all children have access to quality, affordable after school programs.

History of the Boys and Girls Club of America

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with several women in Hartford, Conn.

  • In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to affiliate. The Federated Boys Clubs in Boston was formed with 53 member organizations.

  • In 1931, the Boys Club Federation of America became Boys Clubs of America.

  • In 1956, Boys Clubs of America celebrated its 50th anniversary and received a U.S. Congressional Charter.

  • To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization's name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990.

What Does the Organization Do?

  • To inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. (The Mission Statement)

    They Provide:

    • A safe place to learn and grow
    • Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals
    • Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences
    • Hope and opportunity
