Nineteen-year-old James Bonds showed no emotion as Circuit Judge Ed Jackson read the panel's decision.
Two jurors voted for "life without parole," but 10 of them recommended the "death penalty."
Bonds was convicted Wednesday for the shooting death and robbery of 59-year-old Norman Manning.
The Dothan businessman was killed in September of 1999. Judge Jackson will make the final decision on Bonds' fate.
Members of the Manning family sat throughout the trial, and Thursday they broke their silence after the jury's sentence recommendation.
Sentencing for Bonds has been set for Nov. 12.
A co-defendant, Antoine Washington, will stand trial early next year.
