Unemployment

There's some encouraging news on the job market.

The Labor Department is reporting the fastest level of jobs creation in six months. Non-farm payrolls rose by 337,000 jobs last month.

The government is also boosting estimates of payrolls growth for September and August by more than 100,000 jobs. It says since August 2003, payrolls have risen by 2.2 million jobs.

Because previously discouraged workers resumed their job searches, the unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of one percent to five and one-half percent.

The Labor Department says cleanup efforts from hurricanes hitting Florida and much of the southeast helped to give the job market a boost.

Upon release of Friday morning's report, the stock futures gained strength, indicating a positive open on Wall Street.
