The mayor of Panama City Beach says the closing of a massive beachfront night club could mean the end of the city as a spring break destination.
Mayor Lee Sullivan says that the planned closure of Club La Vela is just part of a bigger trend working against the annual college migration.
It hasn't happened yet, so the Bay County Tourist Development Council is focusing on dispelling any rumors that Club La Vela will be closed during the upcoming spring break.
The council has hired marketing and public relations firms to spread the word that the club will remain open for one last fling.
Club La Vela bills itself as "the largest nightclub in the USA."
It served as MTV's spring break headquarters in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
