The FBI says the number of violent crimes declined last year.
Its annual crime report shows there were just under one 1.4 million crimes of murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault in 2003. That's three-percent less than in 2002 and more than 25-percent less than in 1994.
However, it says the number of murders in the country was up. It says there were 16,503 slayings reported to police last year, 1.7-percent increase from 2002.
Also, the FBI says property crimes such as burglary and theft were down slightly.
