Jobless Rate Unchanged

New numbers show Florida's unemployment rate is virtually unchanged from the previous month, indicating what economists call a "relatively weak" labor market.

The numbers for August show Florida with a jobless rate of 5.3 percent. It was 5.4 percent the previous month. While Florida's unemployment rate is still lower than that of the nation as a whole, it remains about a half-percentage point higher than the previous year.

Once again, government is showing the fastest job growth. Most of those are in local government.

The figures show Henry County with the state's highly jobless rate in August, at 20.6 percent. Monroe County had the lowest, at 2.5 percent.
