A rural Southeast Alabama hospital began using a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that can diagnose a variety of medical conditions. It’s called an open MRI Unit, which stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
The system is an alternative to the “closed” type MRI, which often makes patients feel claustrophobic. The unit is now being used at Opp's Mizell Hospital.
The machine displays tumors and can even determine muscle and ligament damage.
This technology previously could only be found in larger city hospitals, but not anymore. The new MRI equipment costs around $1 million.
