Antidepressants

The Food and Drug Administration is ordering all drugmakers to add the government's strongest safety alert to all antidepressants.

The FDA says the drugs must carry a "black box" warning linking them to increased suicidal thoughts and behavior among children and teens taking them. Also, since the warnings are mainly seen by doctors, the agency is creating an information guide for patients and their parents advising them of the risk.

In a statement, the FDA says it recognizes the health risks of untreated depression in young patients and "advises close monitoring of patients" on antidepressants.

Independent experts working with Columbia University found two to three-percent of children taking antidepressants have increased suicidal thoughts.

The drug labels include details of studies that have so far pointed to Prozac as the safest antidepressant for children.
