Health Costs

The likelihood of a special session of the Alabama Legislature increased because the board that oversees state employees' health insurance program endorsed cost-saving recommendations.

The State Employees' Insurance Board met via conference call to unanimously support the concepts recommended by the Governor's Blue Ribbon Task Force on Health Care Costs. The board that oversees the health insurance plan for education employees took an identical vote a week ago.

Governor Riley says he's made no decision yet about a special session. But Senate President Pro Tem Lowell Barron says Riley has spoken with legislators about possibly starting a session Nov. 8.
