Tragedy strikes as two teen sisters were making their way to the school bus stop in Northwest Florida Wednesday.
Seventeen-year-old Angelina N. Nevitz, and 15-year-old Theresa E. Nevitz were in the Westbound lane of Calhoun County Road 274 when run over near their rural home about 10 miles from Altha and their school.
According to Florida state troopers, the driver, 39-year-old Jorge Betancourt of Altha, braked and veered left but was unable to avoid the girls.
He is not being charged and neither he nor his 16-year-old passenger was hurt.
Altha Assistant Principal Kathryn Waldorff said the deaths were announced during a special assembly at Altha School. She said, "It has been a sad, sad day here,” some of the students, their friends and teammates, had to leave for the day.
Both sisters were athletes. Angie was on the weightlifting team and Theresa was going to play basketball.
