Alabama Highway Funding

Lawmakers have voted to slash the state's highway repair and construction budget.

House republicans want to allocate only $462 million for the 2003 fiscal year, which is $73 million less than last year.

The Alabama Road Builders Association said if the Appropriations Committee approves this cut, it could mean 2,800 fewer jobs for Alabama workers next year. That's because the state wouldn't be able to have as many highway repair and construction jobs available for the workers.

The Appropriations Committee will vote on the bill in January or February.
