Crenshaw Murders

The Crenshaw County district attorney said the capital murder charges against a man accused of killing six members of his girlfriend's family won't go to the grand jury next month because forensic tests won't be complete.

The review could be delayed until at least spring.

Twenty-two-year-old Westley Devone Harris is charged with six counts of capital murder for the shooting deaths of his girlfriend's grandmother, parents and three brothers at their rural farm in Rutledge.

Crenshaw County, like many rural counties, has only two grand jury sessions each year -- one in the spring and one in the fall.

Harris' court-appointed attorney, Charles Kettler, said he is not surprised by the delay, considering the well-publicized backlog at the state Department of Forensic Sciences.

Harris is being held at the Crenshaw County Jail. No bond has been set for his release.
