Tuscaloosa officials plan to install a portion of a steel beam from the twin towers of the World Trade Center in a memorial for the city's Riverwalk project.
Tuscaloosa officials said the labor council and Alabama Congressman Earl Hilliard obtained the 500-pound beam section for the project. It's two feet wide and four feet long.
The Riverwalk will include 13 miles of walking and bicycling trails along the Black Warrior River.
Besides the Sept. 11 remembrance, the beam also will be a memorial to the 11 miners who died in a mine in Brookwood on Sept. 23.
Officials said the beam would put Tuscaloosa on the map as having a permanent memorial for those killed in the tragedies.
Mayor Al Dupont said the city has several memorials planned for Riverwalk and is fortunate to have the beam in remembrance of Sept. 11.
