Illegal Voting Fines

We brought you an earlier story about a controversy surrounding Midland City's mayoral election that evolved into a lawsuit.

Allegations of illegal voting in the Midland City Municipal election have raised some questions. And it turns out selling your vote can cost you more than buying a vote under Alabama law.

For instance, buying a vote is a Class "C" misdemeanor that can get you three months in jail and a $100 fine.

Selling a vote is also good for three months behind bars, but the fine is $500.

In both cases, multiple charges can result in years in jail time and thousands of dollars in fines.

Illegal voting, such as falsifying absentee ballots, is the most serious offense--good enough for two years in prison and a $5,000 fine on each charge.
