Drug Bust

The small town of Cottonwood has had some big time drug busts lately. The most recent involved confiscation of more than $61,000 in drug money.

When pursuing a routine speeding violation in the quiet town of Cottonwood Tuesday night, officers had no idea what they were about to find.

Money, money and more money in shoeboxes and pockets, as well as numerous amounts of drug residue and paraphernalia were found inside the 2002 Chevy Impala.

With the cooperation of officers and a drug canine from the Dothan Police Department, the suspects are now under arrest and in custody at the Houston County Jail.

Twenty-three-year-old Nicolas Cody and 20-year-old Orise Kendall were immediately arrested for unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Kendall was subsequently arrested for bribery after offering the drug money to the officers in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Law enforcement credits a rise in drug trafficking in the area to the re-routing of I-10, leading a lot of drug trafficking to travel from Florida to Dothan by Highway 53.

Officials in surrounding areas are now alerted and watching for any unusual behavior.

This was the sixth vehicle seized by Cottonwood Police officers in the last six months for drug related offenses, and more than $66,000 has been confiscated.
