MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Today has been declared "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day."

Governor Riley will join officials with the state departments of Public Safety and Transportation at a news conference today to encourage safe driving on Alabama roads and highways.

This year's theme is "Drive as if your Life Depends on It."

State troopers say nearly three people are killed every day in traffic related crashes.

DOT said October was selected because it is among the peak months for traffic fatalities.
