Florida Prosecutor Charged in Sex Sting Kills Self in Cell

DETROIT (AP) - A federal prosecutor from Florida accused of flying to Detroit last month to have sex with a 5-year-old girl has committed suicide in his cell in a federal prison in Michigan.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John D.R. Atchison was found unresponsive, taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m. That's according to Felicia Ponce, spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington.

Atchison was an assistant U.S. attorney in northern Florida, based in Pensacola.

Atchison of Gulf Breeze had been charged with three felonies. The most serious charge was crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone under 12. Conviction carries a minimum 30-year prison sentence and a maximum of life.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Miller of the Northern District of Florida says, quote, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Roy's family and friends. We hope that with the passage of time, they can find some measure of healing."
