BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama School of Fine Arts, saying its current theater facilities are inadequate, plans to break ground Sept. 23 on a new $7.6 million, 500-seat performance space.

The 19,212-square-foot expansion of the school's Birmingham campus will include such state-of-the-art features as a sound and light booth large enough for teaching 15 students at a time.

The Birmingham News says the theater expansion will also include a fly tower for changing scenery, a green room, dressing rooms and a shop for designing sets.

The Alabama School of Fine Arts Foundation's director, Bryding Adams, said the current space at the school is outdated and too small to hold the entire student body.

The theater will be available for rental after it opens.
