MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama death row inmate Holly Wood has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution, contending he is mentally impaired and had insufficient counsel when a jury recommended that he receive the death penalty.
Wood is to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday at Holman Prison in Atmore for the 1993 shotgun slaying of his former girlfriend, 34-year-old Ruby Gosha, at her home in Troy.
The Alabama Supreme Court had refused on Wednesday to stay the 50-year-old Wood's execution.
State prosecutors have claimed that Wood demonstrated mental acuity when he planned and killed Gosha in a deliberate fashion.
Wood has also asked Gov. Bob Riley to grant clemency, which would stop the execution. Riley has not yet responded to the request.
