Those who opposed the attempt to update the more than 40 year old ordinance...said the new plan is overly restrictive socialist and one opponent said it reeks of the United Nations.
Tuesdays City Commission started off routine, but when Dothan mayor Mike Schmitz opened the floor for public comments regarding the proposed revision to the zoning ordinance put forth by the city planning department things got heated. Eight people took the floor saying the 130 page document put too many restrictions on home businesses.
"In this struggling economy in these bad times we don’t need to hurt these people who are out of jobs Paul you yourself know Sony shutting down is going to hurt a lot of people and some of those people are need a place to work out of their home if they need be." Said Resident Bobby Lewis
"it shouldn't be a privilege for you to impact your neighbors for what you chose to do for a living if you want to do business in a place that is zoned for business fine that’s why we have it" Remarked Todd McDonald Dothan Planning Director
Mcdonald said the zoning ordinance recognizes the differences between an internet home business and someone who uses heavy machinery.
He says the ordinance is designed to protect the quality of neighborhoods and is out dated.
Mayor mike Schmitz decided to delay the vote for two weeks.
