The newly-created Coffee County Juvenile Conference Committee is now a reality. Coffee County Judge Paul Sherling says that all three school districts in the county have worked together to create a 10-week parent training program. The program is an alternative to court for adolescents who are charged with minor criminal offenses.
Judge Sherling thanked the twenty-four community volunteers throughout the county who will serve as mentors and work with each child. The hope is that this group of volunteers, which includes people from all walks of life, will assist the children in becoming productive young citizens. Perhaps these volunteers can help to steer the children away from criminal activity.
Children’s Policy Council Director Danny Weeks says that it is important to catch these young people before they fall through the cracks.
“Judge Sherling has looked at various programs across the state, and we believe that this particular intervention program is the best for our county,” adds Weeks.
Coffee County juveniles who are charged with less serious offenses, such as truancy, trespassing, criminal mischief, or shoplifting may be able to participate in the alternate program.
