BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Federal officials have leveled a $3 million fine and dozens of safety and health citations against Whitesell Corp. for exposing workers to amputation hazards at manufacturing plans in Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the multimillion-dollar fine Wednesday and cited the company with 72 safety violations.
OSHA says it began inspecting the Tuscumbia plant in March after a report that a worker's hand was amputated. After an inspector noted serious hazards during a visit, federal officials say they began looking at the Muscle Shoals plant too. Among the violations the company is citing for include bypassing safety features on hydraulic forging presses.
A company representative did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press Wednesday. The plant manufactures automotive and other parts.
