Enterprise Police and Coffee County Sheriff’s narcotic investigators have busted up three clandestine meth labs since last Friday.
Officials say they are seeing a disturbing trend in the cooking process. Meth manufacturers are using lithium from household batteries to make the highly-addictive drug. The lithium serves as a heat source and it is extremely volatile when mixed with certain substances, like water.
In one case over the weekend, the meth cook and his 10-year-old son, ran from sheriff’s deputies as they approached the home in Coffee County’s Victoria community. Sheriff’s officials have not released the suspect’s name, but they are seeking his whereabouts, along with the child.
“Now, they got a smaller version compared to the original. We call it a “one-pop”. It is [an] extremely, extremely dangerous method. We are continually getting calls from folks about chemicals being bought for it, and so forth,” said Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth of the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Whitworth says that, in coming weeks, he expects to see an increase in the number of meth-related arrests in Coffee County.
