Highways leading out of Baldwin County could become congested now that Governor Bob Riley ordered residents to evacuate coastal sites as Hurricane Ivan moved into the Gulf of Mexico with the Alabama coast among possible points for landfall.
Riley's order, issued this morning, affects residents in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, coastal resorts where thousands of vacationers already had begun heading out.
Riley said a decision will be made later on any mandatory evacuation of other areas.
State emergency officials said the main route north from the Alabama coast, Interstate 65 from Mobile to Montgomery and Birmingham, may be turned into a one-way evacuation route.
