The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has completed their investigation of a fatal shooting in Dothan last month.

On July 22, Dothan Police opened fire on a car full of drug suspects who reportedly injured a couple officers as they tried to get away.

39-year-old Ashley Wright of Eden, Georgia was killed in the shooting.

All we're waiting for now is for district attorney Doug Valeska to review A.B.I.’s investigation and determine if the use of deadly force was justified.

Houston/Henry county district attorney Doug Valeska hasn't seen A.B.I.’s report regarding a deadly shooting in Dothan that took place late last month.

But from what he's gathered so far, he believes the officer’s use of deadly force was justified.

“At this point I’m tentatively satisfied it was a legitimate shooting. There was a grave risk of death to them (the officers) and other officers on the scene as well as the public that was out there,” said Valeska.

On July 22nd, police suspected a drug deal was going down inside a car parked at the Hop-In convenience store at the intersection of Highway 84 West and Honeysuckle Boulevard.

Police say as the officers closed in on the vehicle, the three suspects tried to get away.

“It was real simple, just stop the car and comply and not try to get away, put your hands up and there would have been no shooting,”

The suspects' vehicle slammed into reverse, hitting an officer and sending him to the hospital.

Reportedly, one of the suspects tried to pull a gun. Valeska says that's when police opened fire.

“When someone's trying to pull a firearm there's a risk of death to them they're going to use deadly physical force. All of this could have been prevented if the occupants in the car just would have submitted,”

Valeska came to this conclusion after reviewing surveillance video as well as witness and police statements.

“Our police officers don't have to wait until they get shot or killed before they use deadly physical force and I think sometimes a community forgets what a grave risk of death they have in working cases,”
Valeska feels the A.B.I. report will reaffirm his opinion regarding the case.

“It’s still preliminary, but I feel confidently it was a justifiable shooting by the officers and that was a last resort,”

Valeska expects to have the ABI report on his desk in the next week.

He says if there's any doubt of in the report, he'll present the case to a grand jury which will then determine if any charges will be filed against the Dothan police officers involved.

One of suspects in the vehicle that night is facing drug charges. Charges against the other suspect are pending.
