City Personnel Board Investigation

Four Dothan Police Department employees who are trying to block a city personnel board investigation were back in court Wednesday. The board wants to question the employees about allegations of wrongdoing by Police Chief John White.

But so far, the workers have not been interrogated. Circuit Judge Larry Anderson issued a ruling in July that limits questions to the employees about the resignation of former police Captain Jim Smith.

The workers claim the ruling effectively shuts down the entire investigation, even though the probe has also uncovered other accusations. They include: copying pagers, monitoring telephone conversations and doing unauthorized background checks on city officials.

Judge Anderson said his ruling applies only to the four plaintiffs and he indicated he would take no action unless his order is violated when the employees are questioned.

The personnel board is appealing the judge’s original ruling.
