Alabama's long-running dispute with the federal government over Medicaid funding has cost the state more than $1.7 million in outside legal bills since October.

The Alabama Medicaid Agency hired the Washington firm of Proskauer Rose LLC to assist in the dispute on how Alabama funds its Medicaid program.

Attorney General Bill Pryor said the Washington firm has handled the dispute under three Alabama governors. He believes the assistance to the state has been worth the price.

Medicaid spokeswoman Mary Finch also said the legal bill is money well spent considering the hundreds of millions potentially at risk.
