ATLANTA (AP) -- A copy of the Ten Commandments went on display at Georgia's state Capitol, prompting the likely debate on whether the historical document belongs in public buildings or spaces.
The Ten Commandments were hung without much fanfare Thursday. The commandments are located with eight other historical documents in a hallway near the Capitol's first-floor snack shop.
Rep. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, says he doesn't believe anyone will take offense. Benton sponsored the House Bill 766 to allow the commandments to be displayed in judicial buildings and courthouses.
But Maggie Garrett, the legislative director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, says her organization opposes the display. Garrett says her organization needs to look at the display before determining whether to take action.
