MIAMI (AP) -- Those hoping to teach in Florida schools will face a tougher road to the classroom come March. That's when a decision by the State Board of Education this week to significantly increase passing certification scores goes into effect.

Those hoping to work in professional and early childhood education, as well as those teaching math and English as a second language will be affected. Educators raised the scores for science in 2012.

Florida's deputy education commissioner Juan Copa told The Miami Herald http://hrld.us/1eRlWUY the change comes as part of a promise Florida made in 2010 to toughen its certification standards when it applied for $700 million in federal funds. He said about a fifth of those who take the $200 Professional Education exam are expected to fail the first time.
