DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida medical school has started a fellowship program for doctors who want to work in prisons and jails.

Nova Southeastern University's new two-year fellowship is one of
few such programs in the country.

The goal of the Broward County school's program is to prepare doctors to handle the myriad ailments that appear in prison populations, difficult patients and a system where security is as important as treatment.

Participants are expected to leave the program qualified for senior-level positions within corrections systems and, it's hoped, bring a higher level of respect to this long-dismissed track of medicine and improve the quality of care.
