PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - Police say two boys who concocted a
hoax about a missing girl were trying to mimic the plot of a
television program.
The fake abduction report about an unnamed girl prompted an
Amber Alert on Wednesday and an intensive search. The boys, who
haven't been identified, were released to the custody of their
parents after authorities unraveled the hoax. They both received
misdemeanor notices to appear for filing a false police report.
The Amber Alert was canceled hours after it was issued. Port St.
Lucie Police Department spokesman Thomas Nichols said the boys'
stories "started to crumble" when they were interviewed by
investigators.
