Alabama native Shawna P. has advanced past the battle rounds of NBC's singing competition show "The Voice," beating 19 year-old Brandon Roush in a duet of Janis Joplin's classic "Piece of my Heart" for Team Shakira.
For the battle round competition, two contestants from the same team sing a duet, and their coach must choose one to eliminate.
Many thought Shawna had the advantage at singing a classic Joplin song, but the coaches were impressed at Roush's ability to hold his own with the powerful southern singer.
"Brandon, you gave me your 150 percent today," Shakira said. "I don't think I've ever heard a man sing a Janice Joplin song like you did today."
Competing coach Usher told Shawna she had "an incredible voice, like a fine wine." Coach Adam Levine agreed.
"Shawna you know I love you and your voice," Levine said. "I thought you guys were total equals out there."
In the end though, Shakira chose Shawna P. to advance and Roush was sent home.
"I had to pick Shawna because she's in a way so perfect as a singer," Shakira said.
Shawna will advance to the knockout rounds of the show, which begin next week. She joined Team Shakira after singing "She Talks to Angels" by The Black Crowes on her blind audition.
Shawna, who grew up near Muscle Shoals, lives in Orange Beach and is a regular performer at the Flora-Bama Lounge on the Alabama-Florida state line.
