NEW YORK (AP) - Matt Lauer was the one being roasted, but his
jab at Tom Cruise may be the joke that lingers longest.
The actor was a surprise guest at a Friar's Club roast of the
"Today" show host.
Cruise said Lauer is the man America wakes up to every morning
"only because we had the channel on NBC before we fell asleep."
Cruise and Lauer had a famous confrontation three years ago on
"Today" when the actor berated Lauer for suggesting that
psychiatric treatment might help some patients.
That year he also drew attention for jumping up and down on the
couch during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey's talk show, talking
excitedly about falling in love with Katie Holmes. At today's
roast, he said Lauer had advised him beforehand: "Go crazy. People
will love you for it."
Shortly after taking his shots, Cruise headed for the exit. Lauer called after him: "Tom, can you stay? I'll get a booster seat."
