China Softly Lands Rover on the Moon: 1st Lunar Lander in 4 Decades

Posted: 12/15/2013 - State broadcaster China Central Television showed images taken from the lander's camera of the rover and its shadow moving down a sloping ladder and touching the surface, setting off applause in the Beijing control center. It said the lander and rover, both bearing Chinese flags, will take photos of each other Sunday evening... China's space program is an enormous source of pride for the country, the third to carry out a lunar soft landing -- which does not damage the craft and the equipment it carries -- after the United States and the former Soviet Union. The last one was by the Soviet Union in 1976... China sent its first astronaut into space in 2003, becoming the third nation after Russia and the United States to achieve manned space travel independently. In 2006, it sent its first probe to the moon. China plans to open a space station around 2020 and send an astronaut to the moon after that....

Posted: 12/14/2013 - On Dec 15 - In 1791, the Bill of Rights went into effect following ratification by Virginia. In 1890, Sioux Indian Chief Sitting Bull and 11 other tribe members were killed in Grand River, S.D., during a confrontation with Indian police. In 1939, "Gone with the Wind" had its world premiere in Atlanta. It starred Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. In 1944, a plane carrying bandleader Glenn Miller disappeared during a flight over the English Channel. He was a U.S. Army major at the time. Forty years later, British authorities said the plane was probably hit by explosives jettisoned from British fighters.
