DOTHAN -- Fire Prevention Week kicked off on Sunday, but Dothan Fire Department continues to promote fire safety awareness throughout the month of October.
They plan to visit local schools throughout the month to teach them safety skills. They want to remind them of safe acts such as staying away from a hot stove, have a fire exit strategy and remembering to stop, drop and roll.
Firefighters said it is easy to teach the youth and allow them to bring it home.
"Sometimes it's hard to tell a middle-aged adult to stop, drop and roll. But, when they go home, they teach those behaviors that we all learned as children," Battalion chief Chris Etheredge said.
This year's theme is preventing kitchen fires. Dothan firefighters said the majority of the fires they respond to begin in the kitchen.
