Ariton Remembers Life Before the 4-Lane

ARITON -- Before Highway 231 was rerouted through Dale County in the 1950s and 1960s, it ran right through the middle of downtown Ariton.

Lifelong residents remember when all of stores on the main street were filled with business.

The highway used to run from Broad Street in Ozark through Ariton, and Troy. It was constructed southbound through Newton, Midland City and Grimes into Dothan.

The old US Highway 231 is now Dale County's County Road 123. The new 4-lane made travel from Dothan to Montgomery much faster than the original highway.
