CARRABELLE, Fla. (AP) -- The Air Force is planning to ask the Florida Forest Service to allow special operation troops to train in a Panhandle forest.

The Air Force wants to use Tate's Hell State Forest in Franklin County to train troops stationed at Eglin Air Force Base.

According to The Tallahassee Democrat, officials say such plans are far from final.

The training may never be allowed if it will harm the environment or compromise forest management plans. A draft environmental impact statement is in the works.

Some people who use the forest for recreation oppose the military's plans, saying the training will restrict public access to the forest, damage the ecosystem and intrude on wilderness areas.

An Eglin spokesman says the military wants to be "just another user of the forest."
