Alabama competitors do well at national state games

By  |

ALABAMA (WTVY) — The 2017 State Games of America in Grand Rapids, Michigan has concluded with youth and adult athletes from across Alabama returning with plenty of awards in hand. With over 70% of participants winning gold, silver or bronze in their respective competitions, Alabama represented itself well at the multi-day national competition. The 5 day national event included 48 sports with over 12,000 total youth and adult competitors from 47 states across the United States and Canada.

Michael Dreilinger, the 2016 Alabama State Games adult male Athlete of the Year (presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors) was the official Alabama flag bearer, leading all youth and adult athletes from Alabama who qualified and registered to compete in their respective sports in the Parade of Athletes at the sold out Opening Ceremony held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI. ASF Foundation CEO and President Ron Creel had this to say about all the Alabama medal winners who represented our state at the State Games of America competition; “In establishing the Alabama State Games program in 1982, the United States Olympic Committee’s vision was to introduce, motive and promote Alabama youth and adults to participate and excel in Olympic sports. This vision would help increase the United States Olympic team’s opportunity to excel and win gold, silver and bronze medals during International Olympic competitions. This year, over 100 medal winners from the Alabama State Games multi-sport event participated in the national State Games of America. A majority of these athletes won either gold, silver or bronze medals. The Alabama State Games event is accomplishing the original vision of the United States Olympic Committee.”

The 2019 State Games of America will take place in Lynchburg, Virginia, July 31-August 4, 2019. Medal winners from specific sports held during the 2018 & 2019 Alabama State Games multi-sport event will be eligible to register and compete nationally. The 2018 Alabama State Games is June 8-10 in the City of Huntsville and Madison County areas.
