DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WTVY) - Wednesday was a very special day for some inmates in Walton County.. Graduation Day!

Six male inmates on track for departure, were chosen for the county jail's first-ever welding class.

Out of all the inmates, none of them had prior welding experience. Just 6 weeks later, they proved to themselves and others that hard work pays off.

Inmates like Kenneth Sanders, who will be released next week says,
"As long as there's breath in your body.. you can change. That's all, you gotta be willing to change yourself and better yourself, especially if you have kids."

The 6 week vocational program was started to decrease re-offending and increase job opportunities for inmates re-entering their communities.

"You have to work hard, it's not as easy as people thinks it is.. but i think it is a great opportunity." -- Bryan Grant, Inmate

To receive the certification, each inmate is required to attend 240-hours of classes. The next welding class will begin on March 26th.
