GENEVA, AL (WTVY) Two outstanding "youth" softball teams from Geneva recently won state tourney honors and now they're setting their sights on a trip to The Dixie World Series. A grand celebration for the squads was held Tuesday evening in downtown Geneva to honor both teams in the 7-8 and 9-10 year old age groups.
Hundreds gathered at citizen's park in Geneva to send their softball teams off to the world series. And the celebration was one that could be heard throughout the town.
Both the Geneva Darlings and the Geneva Angels were welcomed with a big round of applause by parents, grandparents and friends to celebrate their accomplishments.
Ann Harris of Daleville says, "I mean all the people is really excited about this, I am I got a set of twins that's on the Little Darlings."
For the City of Geneva, this was more than a celebration, for the first time in the city's history, they are sending two softball teams to the world series, and the celebration going on behind me just says it all.
Geneva Darlings assistant coach Hagler Ward says, "To win it on the same day in Scottsboro, the older girls won it just about an hour before we you know played so yes that's amazing for this community and for these girls to win it on the same day and bring two state titles back to Geneva is awesome."
These are two teams that coaches say looked like the bad news bears at the beginning of the season, but now they hold their heads high as state champions.
Geneva resident Robert Tinley says, "I can't even describe in words how I feel, I mean, I'm so proud of them, all the girls I mean even the coaches, they've worked so hard to get to this point, I mean its just amazing how far they've come."
The Geneva Darlings will be in action on the diamond this Saturday in Mississippi!
We wish those young ladies all the very best!
