DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) Rooftop bars are the newest trend in downtown areas.
And, that’s exactly what Robin Thagard, owner of The Colby building, envisions bringing to life in downtown Dothan.
The historic Colby Building sits at the corner of Troy and North Foster streets. It’s currently home to Bella’s Fine Dining and Ballroom. In about five weeks, it will house a new tapas and wine bar called Amici's.
On Wednesday. the Dothan Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (Visit Dothan) held a networking event there. Robin Thagard has owned the Colby Building since 2010. She gave Visit Dothan members a tour of the location.
In addition to that rooftop bar and venue, Thagard is also in the process of renovating the building’s third floor. That floor still has a 1950’s flair with original flooring and windows. It will house office space for rent.
Thagard says she hopes the renovations will help drive even more traffic downtown.
“There’s so much coming to downtown Dothan, especially with the new Amphitheatre coming in from the Clark’s and everything else, you know Bird & Bean and the Carmichael Building," said Thagard. "I’m just really excited to be a part of it and want to offer even more. Who wouldn’t want to sit on the rooftop and be able to see downtown Dothan.”
The Colby building was built in 1937. It was the original J.C. Penney’s building. Thagard says that is the very reason they can even consider doing the roof top bar because of the way the building is structured.
The Colby Building office space renovations are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The rooftop bar is expected to open sometime in 2018.
