Destin, Fla. (WTVY) - The Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office says a man shot by deputies outside a Destin motel Thursday night was trying to commit suicide by cop.

30-year-old Randy Patton of Antioch Tennessee is recovering from multiple gunshot wounds after deputies say they shot him when he pointed a gun at them. A 60-year old bystander who walked out of her room at the time of the shooting was shot in the leg. She was treated for her injury at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

The OCSO said it received information from the Nashville, Tennessee Police Department Thursday that Patton sent a text to his wife with a photo of him showing a handgun and making statements he was going to commit suicide. Patton was believed to be in the Destin area. Two deputies located Patton’s car in the parking lot of the Days Inn at 1029 Highway 98 Thursday night. While approaching the hotel to check Patton’s status around 7:00 p.m., the sheriff’s office says Patton came out of a room and initially complied with commands, but then produced a gun and raised it toward the deputies. The OCSO says both officers defended themselves and fired at Patton, who was shot multiple times. The incident was captured on the deputies’ body worn cameras.

Medical staff say Patton told them he was trying to get deputies to kill him. Patton faces charges of resisting an officer with violence and assault on a law enforcement officer. He is at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

The deputies are suspended from duty with pay, pending the results of an investigation which is standard.
