Playing With Professional Athletes

DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) The Westgate Tennis Center in Dothan, truly is a diamond in the rough, allowing regular people like us to play on really good courts. If you were trying to play there this past week, I’d be surprised if you got any quality practice time. But if you did I bet it was the best and toughest practice you’ve had. The reason I say it’s a diamond in the rough is because professionals from all over the world competed at the 16th annual Hardee’s classic.
I want you to think about that for a second.
If you were given the chance to play football in Bryant-Denny Stadium, or The Big House, or even Death Valley you’d consider it an honor. Well that’s what you have to think about when you think of Westgate Tennis Center. Professional Tennis players from 20 different countries came and played on the courts that are right in Dothan’s back yard.
It’s not often that we get to see in person, paid professionals do something we do for fun. But the biggest thing for me is the intimacy of it all. For 2 to 5 dollars a day, you could sit in the stands and watch someone who’s paid to do a sport most of us struggle at. I remember talking to a young man, who’s only 15 and has been playing tennis for. most of his life He told me not only did he watch the tournament but he hit with some of the professionals.
Being in Alabama of course, football is in our roots. But how many of you can say you remember walking across the goal line just as Julio Jones did? What you can say however is I continue to hit the same spot on the net that someone who’s paid to do this hits.
