OZARK, AL (WTVY) Larry Donnell, a tight end for the National Football League’s (NFL) New York Giants, is giving back to his community and hometown of Ozark, Alabama by sponsoring a free football skills camp for youth ages 7-18, Saturday, June 25, 2016 in Fuqua Park. As a kid, Donnell knew the importance of hard work, staying focused on his goals, and honing his skills to become a better athlete. He spent countless hours dreaming of being in the NFL while playing football on the field in Fuqua Park, which is why he chose this particular site for the camp. With a desire to share his knowledge and inspire kids in his hometown to dream big, Donnell and other professional football players and coaches will provide four hours of hands-on training and instruction to participants demonstrating the fundamentals and techniques necessary to improve individual performance while instilling invaluable life skills.
A native of Ozark, Alabama, Larry Donnell attended Carroll High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. For the next four years, his football journey continued at Grambling State University. During Donnell’s freshmen year in college, he switched from serving as quarterback to his current position of tight end. At the end of his fourth season at Grambling, Donnell had amassed 38 receptions for 432 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Undrafted in 2011, after his senior year at Grambling, Larry Donnell signed with the Giants’ practice squad in 2012 and played on the special teams during the 2013 season. He made history on September 25, 2015 by scoring three touchdowns during a nationally televised showdown against Washington. No other Giants’ tight end since Joe Walton in 1962 had scored three touchdowns in one game.
Although Donnell suffered a season ending neck injury in November, 2015 and placed on injured reserve, he was cleared by doctors in April of 2016 and is returning back as a Tight End for the New York Giants.
