More than 400 peanut farmers gather for trade show

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Peanuts are a multi-million dollar industry in the southeast, it employs close to 1,000 people in Alabama alone.

That's why around 400 peanut producers met at the Alabama-Florida Peanut Trade Show to discuss advancements.

There are around 175-200,000 acres of peanuts across the state, 2/3 of them in southeast Alabama.

Peanut extension specialist Kris Balkcom says the crop has gone down a tad this year, but it's nothing to worry about.

"Cotton and corn prices have been going up. With that being said, when you think about peanuts, even though that price is down right now, it's early in the game right now,” said Balkcom. “Since we grow peanuts on a world market, we're looking at what's going on around the world."

Such as South America; Balkcom says it's dry there right now, so depending on what happens there, it could hinge a lot into the market here.

Among the growers, were about 80 vendors, including Miss and Little Miss Peanut making grilled peanut butter sandwiches!

Balkcom says Alabama grew around 195,000 acres of peanuts last year. Georgia had a record high of around 900,000.
