FT. GAINES, Ga. (WTVY) 1st Lt Weston Lee’s body was laid in state at the First United Methodist Church.
Family, friends, and people who just wanted to say thank you came out to pay their respects for someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
One man says, "It's a sad day for this area and for the country"
Lee's life of bravery and leadership shines through in the minds of those who knew him.
"Until it hits Small Town USA, you don't realize impact it has on the families and communities in these small towns"
He was killed by IED on April 29th in Iraq.
Many say, without lee and others like him we wouldn't be where we are today.
"If it wasn't for what these military men do, we wouldn't have what we have, we wouldn't be able to come and go as Americans"
Lee graduated from Southwest Georgia Academy in 2010.
And like a lot of teenage boys, he played football and baseball.
People also remember lee as someone who was kind and had a great sense of humor.
And perhaps, it's this final act of sacrifice that people will remember most.
"It's very touching, you know you see it on the news but it doesn't hit you until it come home to you like it came home to us"
And their final goodbyes were given with an American heroes salute.
A memorial service is scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p-m in the Early County High School auditorium.
