Dothan (WTVY) Dothan police recently charged a Coffee County man for allegedly possessing counterfeit money. The arrest comes just months after he was accused of felony identity theft. Chad Elliot Watson, 33, of Enterprise was arrested Wednesday on four counts of possession of a forged instrument.
“We believe he gave bogus $20 bills to the victim during a transaction that stemmed from an online marketplace transaction that required a meeting for making payment. The victim later confirmed with a bank that the bills were counterfeit,” Dothan Police Investigator Erik Broten said. Watson’s home was also searched and equipment consistent with counterfeiting allegedly seized.
Coffee County court records show Watson was free bond for felony counts of identity theft stemming from 2016 arrests. Prosecutors are seeking to revoke bonds. Watson is being held in the Houston County Jail.
“We believe more charges will likely be filed as we continue our investigation,” Broten said. He called it premature to speculate if Watson is connected with others that recently passed counterfeit money in the area but he expects additional charges.
