Inmate sentenced in Houston County found dead in prison cell

Springville, AL (WTVY) An inmate serving a life sentence for his conviction in Houston County was found dead Saturday in his prison cell. Alabama Department of Corrections officials identified the inmate as 33-year old Joseph Michael Wood.

St. Clair Correctional Facility officers found Wood unresponsive about 2:15 p.m. Saturday during a security check of the facility. Wood was alone in a two-person cell and lying on the floor unconscious, per a report from ADOC.

The prison, northeast of Birmingham, was placed on lockdown while the matter was investigated. Wood reportedly had no visible signs of stab wounds when he was discovered on the floor of his cell. The body was turned over to the county coroner for an autopsy.

Court records show Wood was sentenced by Houston County Circuit Judge Kevin Moulton to life in prison. At the time he showed Waynesboro Way address in Dothan.
